Our research group aims to advance the knowledge of Greek Linguistics (phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, stylistics and stylometry, lexicography and etymology). Although our main focus is Ancient Greek (from its origins to 6th century AD) we also take in consideration later textual evidence relevant for the understanding of the evolution of Greek, the best documented language among those currently spoken.

We deem of the utmost importance the combined study of literary and documentary sources, and working with digital tools for the building, querying and exploiting of text corpora and data bases of Ancient Greek. Therefore, we are actively working in the creation and development of such tools.

From a methodological point of view, our research group can be characterized by the following points:

  • We work within the frame of functional-cognitive linguistics, and linguistic typology.
  • We aim to exploit, in the framework of the Digital Humanities, the full possibilities of the digital tools in our research (specially in the field of computational linguistics).

The specific lines of research we are currently working on include the following:

  • The evolution of the markers of mood and modality in Ancient Greek, as it appears documented in the private letters of documentary papyri.
  • Using treebanks for the study of the syntax and the style of a number of Greek writers.
  • The syntax and style of Philodemus from Gadara and the corpus of the Epicurean philosophers from the Papyri Herculanenses.

We are open to collaboration with other teams and scholars sharing similar aims or methodologies for research, and in the application of similar technologies for studying Ancient Greek.
