Digital Humanities Laboratory (LabHD)

The LabHD of the ILC was created in March 2022 as a collaborative work tool to pose new challenges to the research carried out at the Institute. It is a permanent structure that adapts to the human and material resources available at any given time and that aims to promote collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and experiences, with the long-term objective that the research carried out at the ILC can better face the challenges posed by the Humanities both at the CSIC and globally.
The challenges of research on the languages and cultures of the Mediterranean are, on the one hand, to achieve the pace of constant innovation that allows a digital world characterized by continuous qualitative progress and, on the other, to connect with a society that has radically changed its ways of information, learning and discussion based on social networks and digital tools.
The general objectives of LabHD include:
- Understanding how data should be digitally processed and modelled for scientific purposes through a team effort and an open-access structure and methodology.
- Significantly contributing to the progress of knowledge in the disciplines cultivated at the ILC by developing more effective and innovative infrastructures, tools and work methodologies.
- Opening up knowledge related to the Humanities to other actors and debates outside and within the Academy.
- Experimenting with and gaining in-depth knowledge of new digital tools and work and collaboration processes for the execution of research projects.
The specific objectives of the ILC LabHD include:
- Facilitating access to calls for Human Resources that benefit and support ILC research.
- Offering or channelling training that allows researchers to know which digital tools and standards are appropriate for their research in each of its selected phases.
- Providing technical support to IPs and researchers to devise, design and implement research projects, with special attention to data modelling.
- Helping to disseminate the content of the projects and lines of research on collaborative platforms aimed at citizens and the educational world.
- Developing and applying analytical tools common to the lines of research in areas such as the management of linguistic corpora, the analysis and editing of digital texts, textual data mining, image processing, data and results visualisation, network analysis, etc.
The work of LabHD is structured along these lines:
- Study of digital projects, development of ideas, analysis, planning.
- Development, maintenance and updating of software. Programming in Python, Java, JavaScript and PHP (mainly).
- Servers: Installation and configuration, security, performance optimization and recovery.
- UI/UX web development (design and development/operation and interface). Creation and maintenance of dynamic websites.
- Database management, mainly SQL.
