Arab-Romance Studies

On June 9, 2025, the Associated R&D&I Unit “Arab-Romance Studies” was established between the University of Oviedo and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), through the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East (ILC) and the School of Arab Studies (EEA). This new unit formalizes a longstanding and productive collaboration between researchers from both institutions.

The unit is coordinated by Raquel Suárez García (University of Oviedo) and Pablo Roza Candás (ILC, CSIC), and comprises 11 members affiliated with the ILC, the EEA, and the University of Oviedo, from the areas of Spanish Language and Arabic and Islamic Studies within the Department of Spanish Philology, Romance Philology within the Department of Classical and Romance Philology, and Art History within the Department of History of Art and Musicology.

The primary aim of the unit is to foster, enhance, and consolidate scientific collaboration among researchers, with a particular focus on Arab-Romance studies and related disciplines, such as palaeography, codicology, dialectology, historical linguistics, Romance literatures, medieval and modern history, and art history. These objectives are pursued through various initiatives in research, teaching, institutional cooperation, and knowledge transfer.
